Middle row: Grant Snyder, Darryn Walters, Drew Gilliland, Bailey Branson, Drake Gilliland, Garrett Tinsley, Ephram Blanco. Front row: Zac Swanson, David Miller, Elysha Foster, Justin Spencer and Ty Chasek.
Acknowledging the Tigers will face tough competition in a solid district, head wrestling Coach Randy Donelson said the outlook for the 2014-15 season was looking good. The Tigers are part of the Western Trails Conference and engage in Class C tournament matches.

“We did good last year,” Donelson said, “We tend to be successful mostly in tournaments. We took second place in Crawford and placed in the top four in both Rushville and Sidney last season. We play in a tough district, however. Chadron is always tough and so are Valentine and Ainsworth.”

Donelson said the team has three returners including one state placer, team captain senior Drew Gilliland. Gilliland placed fourth at state as a junior, fourth as a sophomore and fifth as a freshman.
“I expect he’ll have another good season,” Donelson said. “We have four seniors that are helping get out kids in the right spot to compete.” The four seniors are Garrett Sterkel, Ephram Blanco, Elysha Foster and Drew Gilliland .

“We had a bunch of freshman join the team last year,” Donelson said. “So we are still pretty young but they are looking good. Darryn Walters and Zac Swanson both had good seasons last year and we have a tough new freshman in Ty Chasek. They are all making a big impact.”

Donelson also noted freshman Justin Reifschneider who will be on the varsity squad this season.
“We’re loaded with sophomores and juniors,” he said. “We are happy to be where we are at. I want to see the kids work harder and they seem motivated. I think we have a team that wants to compete.”
This will be Donelson’s fourth year as head coach for the Tigers after serving three years as assistant. Donelson said he was active with the Mitchell Wrestling Federation and has known the kids for many years. “I work with the little kids in our community also,” he said.

“I get to watch them as they grow up and into the high school program. I want to leave an impact as best I can on wrestling in Mitchell. Wrestling has always been a love of mine.”
