Lions wrestling squad small but motivated

With a grand total of five wrestlers the Morrill grapplers are looking strong as they head into the 2014-15 season. The Lions, a Class D-4 district team, had a good season last year with returning heavy-weight senior Matt Hessler placing at the state tournament. The Lions also had three other state qualifiers at the end of the 2013-14 season.

Assistant wrestling coach Lupe Gonzalez said that the five man squad is looking ‘real strong’ as they prepare for Class D competition.
“We have one senior, three juniors and one freshman this year,” Gonzalez said. “With such a small team and such a variety in weight classes we aren’t built for duels but should have some potential in tournament competition.”

Gonzalez said all five of the boys are in different weight groups so they have to go to actual wrestling meets to see where their strengths are. “We are strong in the middle,” Gonzalez said, “and with Matt returning we expect to be strong in heavyweight competition.”

By weight the team includes junior Justus Peterson (106), junior Garrett Zwiebel (160), junior Nooney Gomez (170), freshman Will Howell (182) and senior Matt Hessler (285).
Gonzalez said head coach Bobby Wiegel is starting his third year with the Lions. Wiegel is a former Lion himself who had a successful wrestling career for Morrill High School. Gonzalez said that he has been involved with the program since 2002.

“We want to improve upon our skills as a team,” Gonzalez said. “The kids have all set goals for themselves and they continue to work hard with less. They are good work out partners and keep each other motivated.”

Gonzalez said they are expecting good things this season. “We are small in numbers but ready to go,” he said. “We’ll address things week by week. We know we’ll be facing some tough competition in Banner County on the 13th but I think the kids are ready.”
