The Mitchell Tigers are working to place higher in the Western Trails Conference this season after finishing in 5th place last year. The Tigers had an overall team record of 10-13 and Head Coach Jayson Gregory said with several returners, including four letter winners, despite some early losses things are shaping up this season. Gregory said the team is looking good regarding speed, height and experience.

“Above all we want to improve our conference standings from the previous year,” Gregory said. “The players all have good attitudes but we play in a tough district.”

Gregory said he was happy with the way things have been going in early practice and that the team has a lot of size and that the kids are coachable.

The Tigers have four seniors this year in Alex Morales, Antonio Barrios, Creighton Reichert and Rhakeem Gage.
“Both Morales and Barrios have some starting experience and that helps,” Gregory said.

Returning juniors (all letter winners) are Colby Eberspecher, Chase Watson, Hadly McCormick and Jaden Snyder. At the height of 6’4” Snyder is sure to be a threat this season.

Gregory said six new sophomores will be active on the varsity roster this year. They are Joe Pieper, Christian Perez, Dylan Mehling, Cleveland Burnett, Seth Marcoe and Dmitri Newens. As a starting sophomore the 6’5” Pieper is sure to see plenty of action.

Gregory said will be his second year as head coach for the Tigers. His assistant coaches are Tanner Long and Edgar Rodriguez.
“The team has a good attitude and I’m pleased with their work ethic,” Gregory added.

The Tigers play as a C1 school in Sub District 12. Despite height and speed the 28 Tiger players from grades 9 – 12 have stumbled a bit at the open of this season. They were defeated in non-conference play by Scottsbluff (71 – 23) and by Gross Catholic (63 – 34) earlier this month. The Tigers also struggled against Gering in the past few weeks, losing their first official conference match 76 to 44 on Dec. 11.

Their next game will be against Southeast High School in Yoder, Wyo. this Friday Dec. 19 starting at 7 pm. The Tigers will be looking for a win.

“We need to work on our rebounding and defense,” Gregory said.
