After spending seven years in Lusk, Lions head boys’ basketball coach Bill Edwards is excited to start his second year in Morrill. “We were 4-18 last year but the team has much improved and I think things are looking good,” Edwards said.

The Lions are a D-1 school who play in the Western Trails Conference and the Panhandle Athletic Conference.

“We have four starters returning this year,” Coach Edwards said. “I’m happy with our progress so far.”

The four returners are Ryan McMackin, Jorge Lora, Victor Valles and Jordan Rohde.

Edwards said his goals for the season were to improve with every game.

“We need to play our best basketball and make a run at state,” he said. “Our guard play is good and we are learning to play as a team. I’m seeing good things with shot selection and our defense is much, much better.”

Edwards noted that he’d like to see improvement in rebounding and transition.

“I’d like to see the boys getting up and down the court quicker.”
The coach added the team has made some changes on defense from last year moving to a primarily man to man approach. “We’re using the same offense as last year,” he said.

Edwards said key a key game will against Hemingford on Jan. 6. “That is always a big one,” he said, “but all of the teams we face are competitive.”

There are 12 kids on the team including seniors Lora, Velles, Zech Larson and Kilian Petruch. Petruch, a foreign exchange student from Germany is trying the sport for the first time. Edwards said that Petruch is the only newcomer on the team this season.

Edwards said that he also coaches the Morrill Junior High team so he is familiar with the skills of the three new freshman who have joined the high school squad.

Edwards is joined in coaching with his assistant Kyle Patterson.
