Scottsbluff defeated Bennett County 51-27 in the pool action dual.
SCOTTSBLUFF – Somewhere in the course of their five duals Saturday in their home invitational dual tournament, the Bearcats scored one more team point that made the difference in Scottsbluff finishing second or third.
It may have come in senior Sabian Harsh’s 10-1 major decision over Garden City Kan., opponent Jesse Nunez, or in sophomore Ben Rodriguez’s technical fall over Garden City’s Ronnie Fry. Those extra team points can make a difference, especially in a dual tournament.

After the Bearcats swept their pool matches, they were victimized in the championship pool to finish 3-2. West Point-Beemer had the same record after falling to Pueblo West, Colo., and 5-0 tournament champion Garden City. Scottsbluff battled Garden City hard before the Buffaloes prevailed 42-39.

So second place came down to total team points, which Scottsbluff scored 106 and West Point-Beemer had 105.
“I felt like the kids really showed up to wrestle,” Bearcat coach James Miller said. “The majority of our team was ready to go, and I think we just need to keep focusing on getting these guys prepared to go.”

The Scottsbluff Invitational, after being changed from open bracket format to dual scoring two years ago, proved successful for the host team with the Bearcats getting to take on teams from two other states; Cheyenne Central was in the opposite pool of the eight-team, four-state tourney.

Scottsbluff opened the tournament with two dominating wins, beating Jefferson, Colo., 65-15 and then Bennett County, S.D., 51-27. Scottsbluff then came out on top of a 40-33 decision over Pueblo West, Colo.

“We won our first three duals so that put us in the championship pool,” Miller said. “Those were some good duals for us.”
In its final two duals, Scottsbluff dropped a 36-27 setback to West Point-Beemer before falling 42-39 against Garden City.
Individually for the Bearcats, senior Keegan Hessler and Rodriguez each finished the tournament unbeaten at 5-0.

Sophomore George Hernandez, freshman Mario Ybarra, sophomore Salem Harsh and Sabian Harsh all finished with 4-1 records. Kobe Paez and Genaro Gurrola each lost just twice. Paez finished with a 3-2 mark and Gurrola went 2-2.
Hessler was dominating on the day. He opened the tournament with a pin over Jefferson’s Julian Salazar in 58 seconds. Hessler then pinned Bennett County’s Abraham Scheidegger in just 27 seconds before pinning Pueblo West’s Tyler Smith in 42 seconds.

Hessler then scored a 12-4 major decision over West Point-Beemer’s Hunter Schroeder before wrapping up the tournament with a fourth pin, in 2:50 against Garden City’s Sammy Guevara.

Rodriguez scored a technical fall over Jefferson’s Brandon Onofre 16-1 and then pinned Bennett County’s Adam Hahn in 1:03. Rodriguez wrapped up the tourney with a 15-0 technical fall against Garden City’s Fry.
Hernandez’s wins included a pin over Jefferson’s Marissa Gallegos in 1:03, a pin over Bennett County’s Jared Harris in 42 seconds, another pin in 4:51 over Pueblo West’s Zach Cisneros, and a pin in 1:22 over Garden City’s Ruben Huerta.

After dropping a 4-2 decision to Jefferson’s Kyle Cisneros in his first match, Ybarra went on a scoring spree. He earned a pin in 1:36 over Bennett County’s Weston Ireland, another pin in 1:56 over Pueblo West’s Gabriel Romero, and then two wins by forfeit.

The Harsh brothers also wrestled well. Sabian lost 6-3 to Bennett County’s Sam Ireland but then went on a four-win run, which included a pin in 1:01 over Jefferson’s Sylvesre Alvarado, a pin in 1:46 over Pueblo West’s Donovan Gonzalez, a 17-1 technical fall over West Point Beemer’s Juan Mendoza, and a 16-1 major decision over Garden City’s Jesse Nunez.

Salem Harsh opened the tourney with a pin over Jefferson’s Johnathan Lopez in 32 seconds followed by another pin in 1:07 over Bennett County’s Dean Laverack. Harsh then earned an 8-3 decision over Pueblo West’s Dante Madril to seal the Bearcats’ win.

Harsh dropped a 7-3 decision to West Point-Beemer’s Jesus Cervantes before finishing off the tournament with a pin in 21 seconds over Garden City’s Daniel Kramer.
Miller said the week of practice leading up to the meet proved successful for the Bearcats.

“We had some good practices over break, had two-a-days for a couple days, and continued to work on some things that we needed to work on. So the kids did a good job,” he said.
“We have a week off this week for varsity, so we’ll have a little extra time to keep working on technique and keep getting ready for the long haul that we have for the next three weeks.”

The Bearcats’ next action will be in a dual meet at Green River, Wyo., on Jan. 16 and 17.
After taking on Gering in dual action on Jan. 20 in Gering, Scottsbluff then travels to Lafayette, Colo., for the Centaurus Invitational on Jan. 23 and 24. The Bearcats then reciprocate Garden City’s visit to Scottsbluff for the Buffaloes’ tradition-rich meet in southwest Kansas on Jan. 30 and 31.

Gering is back in action Saturday when the Bulldogs travel to Parker, Colo., for the Legend Invitational. Gering will then be in the Lexington meet on Feb. 16 before the Bulldogs play host to the Twin Cities dual against Scottsbluff on Feb. 20.
