Bulldog wrestlers compete tough at Colorado duals tourney

PARKER, Colo. – The young Gering varsity wrestling team put up a good fight Saturday in going 2-3 in duals and finishing in 11th place at the Legend Duals.
Seniors Christian Pester and Marcelino Ramos had the top performances for Gering, both achieving 5-0 records.

Pester went undefeated at 285 pounds, lifting his season record to 12-0. Pester won one match by forfeit, and his other victories came by pin.
Ramos posted his 5-0 mark in Parker at 106 and 113 pounds, recording all of his wins either by pin or technical fall. Ramos is now 17-2 on the season.
Three other Bulldogs ended the Legend Invite with winning records. Freshman Cody Ybarra went 4-1, and senior Quentin Timblin and freshman Trayton Johnston both finished 3-2.

Gering has a freshman-dominant roster, with 25 freshmen among its list of 33 students.
Three other Gering wrestlers have winning records for the season, including another freshman in Aaron Tovar at 120 (9-8). Other Bulldogs starting out well are Timblin at 170 (16-6) and Ybarra at 152 (14-7).

The Bulldogs began a busy week Tuesday night with a trip to Wheatland, Wyo., for dual action that was postponed from Dec. 16.
Gering will then travel to Lexington for Friday’s East/West Challenge. Gering is guaranteed duals against Grand Island Northwest, Crete, Omaha Skutt Catholic and Aurora. Other teams involved in the event are Gothenburg, Lexington and Chadron.
Gering will be at home Tuesday to compete in dual action against Scottsbluff on Tuesday. The varsity matches are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
Scottsbluff will be coming off a Friday-Saturday dual tournament at Green River, Wyo.

Morrill sees wins at Garden County meet

OSHKOSH – Morrill senior Matthew Hessler and Lion junior Garrett Zwiebel were weight-class championship Saturday in the Garden County Invitational.
Zwiebel finished first at 160 with a pin fall over Sedgwick County, Colo., junior Collin Cassidy with one second left in the first period.
Hessler scored an 11-1 major decision over Sutherland senior Bryson Dick in the 285-pound/heavyweight division’s championship match.

Also medaling for Morrill was junior Elvariste Gomez, who finished a round-robin competition at 170 pounds in second place.
Morrill rode that trio’s successes to a fifth-place team finish in the 21-school tournament with 72 points. Sedgwick County had a winning total of 191.5 points, with Bridgeport second at 183.5 and Sutherland in third with 94.

Also finishing second from county-area schools were Bayard JV freshman Mitch McKibbin at 106 pounds, Banner County junior Garrett Grubbs at 152 pounds.
Third-place medalists included Bayard JV senior Robert Niezwaag at 132 pounds,
Fourth-place finishers included Bayard JV senior Alan Ray at 182.

The Bayard JV finished ninth in the team standings with 58 points, while Banner County and Minatare tied for 14th with 18 team points apiece. Gering had a small JV team that came in 17th with 14 points, and the Scottsbluff JV had nine points for 20th place.

Bayard claims WTC title with three champs

HEMINGFORD — For the first time since 1990 Bayard wrestling team captured the championship of the Western Trails Conference Tournament on Thursday in Hemingford.
The Tigers piled up 206 points to edge Mitchell by just three points for the title. Mitchell finished runner-up with 203 and Bridgeport followed in third with 171.
Bayard was led to its team title by three individual champions. Senior Tristan Hunter (12-1 on the season) repeated as conference champion at 220 pounds by finishing a round-robin bracket with a 4-0 record.

Junior Zaine Gallegos (21-0) remained unbeaten and won his first conference title by placing first at 285. Also winning his first conference title for the Tigers was freshman Alex Araujo (20-1), who finished first at 113.
Five other Tigers scored points with top-four finishes. Freshman Mitch McKibbin (14-4) placed runner-up at 106 and senior Felipe Palomo (14-8) finished second at 170. Scoring fourth-place finishes were freshman Bryce Burry (7-11) at 126, senior Robert Niezwaag (2-3) at 132 and senior Malachi Belford (4-12) at 160.

Mitchell also finished the tournament with three individual champions and four runners-up. The Tigers’ champions were sophomore Darryn Walters (17-3) at 120, junior Drew Gilliland (17-1) at 126 and sophomore William Swanson (13-8) at 132.
Freshman Ty Chasek (14-2) finished second to Walters at 120 pounds, while junior Cody Mueller (9-8) was second at 145, junior Brayden Wiedeman (5-2) was runner-up at 182 and senior Garrett Sterkel (11-8) was second at 195.

Morrill junior Elvariste Gomez (10-2) also was an individual conference champion by placing first at 170. Senior heavyweight Matthew Hessler (11-3) finished second to Bayard’s Gallegos on a 3-2 decision in the 285-pound championship match, and junior Garrett Zwiebel (12-3) finished second in the 160-pound round-robin.
Sidney and Banner County also competed in the tournament as non-conference teams. The Red Raiders rolled up 260.5 points to win the overall team standings and had three individual champions.
