Bulldog boys rebuild with strong underclassmen

After graduating a large class of seniors last spring, the Gering boys’ soccer program is looking to reload with some talented underclassmen. Head coach Justin Clark, now in his 13th year since coming into the program in its inaugural year in 2002, will be focusing on the continuous development of strong fundamental skills from a large squad of players.

“We have 35 kids out so far this year,” Clark said. “We always need to work on our ball control and first touch. Everything we do builds off of that.”

Strong fundamentals have always been Clark’s key to any team success. Last year the Bulldogs, led by seven strong seniors that included one Midland University soccer recruit Alex Clark and two Chadron State College football recruits Justin Brester and Gage Smith, earned a 10-9 season record in the B-8 District. This year, Clark said his goal is to compete for a District title.

Clark will also be looking for leadership from eight seniors this year. They include Nic Bibb, Forward; Russell Dobrovolny, Defender; Jon Guerrero, Defender; Blade Conquering Bear, Forward; Carlos Perez, Forward; Marcelino Ramos, Forward; Brandon Wallace, Defender; and Matt Wolfe, Midfield.

Second-year assistant coach Jesus Duque, a former Scottsbluff High School stand-out and WNCC player, is also in the process of developing two new goalkeepers, junior Chris Bartow and sophomore Dan Marshall, to replace last year’s senior goalkeeper Dylan Wetherington, who averaged 6.6 saves per game.
The Bulldogs can also expect quick and solid field play from junior Midfielder Brent Barge, and junior Defenders Brendan Brester, Jacob Pieper and Mitchell Martin.

The Bulldog’s varsity roster includes: Daniel Marshall, Chris Bartow, Javier Campos, Brandon Wallace, Jason Doll, Luis Hernandez, Brenden Brester, Ethan Parks, Brent Barge, Aaron Tovar, Jacob Pieper, Josh Parra, Blade Conquering Bear, Nic Bibb, Ty Romey, Russell Dobrovolny, Cristian Moreno, Marcelino Ramos, Carlos Perez, Jonathan Guerrero, Matt Wolfe, and Mitch Martin.

The Bulldogs open their season this Saturday, March 21 on the road for the North Platte Tournament. They will play Holdrege at 11 a.m. and Kearney Catholic at 2:30 p.m. They will travel again next Tuesday, March 24 to take on North Platte at 5:45 p.m. before hosting their first home game March 26 with Central at Memorial Stadium in Gering beginning at 6 p.m. Gering will play a total of 17 games before Districts in early May. Sub-State and State action is scheduled for mid-May.
