The Morrill Lions track team plays in District D-1, the Western Trails Conference and the Panhandle Conference. They will start their season in Chadron this weekend and hopes are high for a successful meet.

“We have a great bunch of student athletes to work with this year,” head coach Rick Sides said. “They are a fun and talented group of kids.”

Sides said he was happy Morrill High School, despite being on the smaller side, has a great track and indoor athletic opportunities.
“We have great facilities here and a great coaching staff to work with. With this combination we should be able to develop a competitive track team,” he said.

Coach Sides said working extra hard between the meets is important to maintain and hopefully improve upon each individual athlete and event.

“Work on improving each athlete’s performance week by week is our main goal for the season,” he said. “This will help them reach their peak performance level by the time District and State competition comes around.”

There are 19 students on the team this year including six returning seniors and four juniors. Sides has coached track for 20 seasons. His coaching staff is made up of Bobby Weigle, Niki Fredrickson and Chris Baltz.
