Second-year head coach Matt Korkow is planning for a rebuilding year for the Minatare Indians track team.

“We didn’t win any of our meets last year, but took a lot of thirds and seconds,” Korkow said. “We lost one of our sprinters from last year when his family moved to Colorado. He was one who qualified for state.”

However, five members, two sophomores and three seniors, are returning for the small squad of 16. Juan Garfio is one of the returners who qualified for the state tournament last year.

Korkow said his expectations are to see the team improve with every meet. He said he also wants to see Garfio return to state in the 100 meter event, and Tyler Koke qualify in the high jump event. He also wants to see Franki Doty qualify as a distance runner.

Minatare senior Miguel Martinez also returns for his fourth year in the throwing events. “He’s really put in the effort and time,” Korkow said. “I hope he can qualify for state in either discus or shotput.”
Korkow continues to work with the team on the fundamentals of how to run and jump properly. “We’re working on the basic techniques to get the track program built up again,” he said. “We should have about 35 kids coming out for track, but we have to start where we are.”

Minatare’s first meet is this weekend at Kimball, where they’ll face a number of schools in the Minuteman Activities Conference. That will be the first indicator of how the team has progressed since the start of spring training.

Another big event coming up is the Class D-C-B Invite at Bayard on April 2 and the MAC tournament, also in Bayard on May 2.
Korkow is assisted by JJ Ozuna. Steve Foster, Kyle Cotton and Minatare Principal Kyle Metzger also volunteer their time to help out. JJ is the head football coach and Kyle is basketball coach. Korkow said they all help out with the other teams throughout the year.

“The kids are motivated and they want to improve themselves in early practices,” he said. “It’s a big improvement over last year. I really missed the motivation, but it’s back this year and that’s good to see.”
