The Gering girls’ tennis team opened their 2015 season on Tuesday afternoon by hosting a triangular match with Scottsbluff and Alliance.

Gering was first on the court in a battle of the Bulldogs against Alliance. Samantha Gutherless posted an 8-6 win over Ashley Fattig in No. 2 singles and Sheridan Blanco was an 8-6 winner over M’Kayla Steen in No. 5 singles. Losing their singles matches were No. 1 Carolyn Howton (4-8), No. 3 Annessa Escamilla (3-8), No. 4 Kaitlyn Waggoner (6-8) and No. 6Annastacia Cowan (5-8). Howton and Blanco teamed for Gering’s only win at No. 2 doubles by 8-2.

Scottsbluff had better results against Alliance, almost sweeping the singles positions with five wins out of six matches. Winners included No. 1 Zoe Holscher (8-0), No. 2 Christiana Villarreal (8-0), No. 3 Sarah Cloud (8-5), Sarah Woodward (8-1) and Aubrey Straub (8-6).

Their only loss was at No. 4 singles as Alisha Huynh fell to Alliance’s Courtney Little Hoop, 4-8.
In doubles action, Scottsbluff’s Holscher and Villarreal teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3.

Final matches of the evening had Scottsbluff against Gering. Again, Scottsbluff almost swept the singles division as No. 1 Holscher was an 8-1 winner over Carolyn Howton. At No. 2, Scottsbluff’s Villarreal was also an 8-0 winner over Waggoner. Sarah Cloud beat Samantha Gutherless 8-3 at No. 3. And Scottsbluff’s Sara Woodward topped Sheridan Blanco 8-3 at No. 4. Two other singles matches were cancelled due to problems with the lights.

Scottsbluff’s wins in doubles came from No. 1 Cloud and Woodward at 8-5 and No. 3 Holscher and Villarreal at 8-3. Gering’s only doubles win was No. 2 Gutherless and Escamilla, 8-5.

The Gering triangular was Scottsbluff’s third outing of the season. After a road match at the Grand Island Central Catholic Invitational, Scottsbluff opened their home tennis season on March 24 in a dual against Ogallala. While it was close, the Bearcats came away with the loss.

Juniors Zoe Holscher at No. 1 singles and Christina Villarreal at No. 2 singles both had strong performances, each winning by an 8-0 score. And sophomore Sarah Woodward won her No. 6 singles match 8-4.
In doubles action, the No. 3 team of Zoe Holscher and Christina Villarreal came away with an 8-2 win.

“Everybody looked pretty good,” Coach Behnke said. “We probably could have or should have won a couple more of the matches, but we’re still getting back into the swing of the season. We’re working on becoming more consistent and having more strategy in keeping the ball alive when we play matches.”
