Photos by Kay Grote/Gering Citizen - Scottsbluff’s Matthew Barraza leads the pack of boys 1600 M runners, followed by Gering freshman Xavier Arellano and Scottsbluff senior Shane Burkey. Barraza won the event in 4:45.29 followed by Burkey, Arellano and Scottsbluff’s Josh Hergenreder at Saturday’s Buffalo Bill Invitational meet.
Gering and Scottsbluff track teams traveled to North Platte last Thursday to compete in the Buffalo Bill Invitational track meet. The weather was not ideal but the student athletes competed to the best of their abilities. North Platte was the point-winner on the boys’ side with 138. The Scottsbluff Bearcats were second place with 106 points. Hastings was third with 86, York was fourth with 71, Alliance fifth at 57, Gering sixth with 36, and Northwest seventh with 33.

Scottsbluff’s Matthew Barraza took first in the 1600 meter run at 4:45.29. Josh Hergenreder from Scottsbluff was the winner of 3200 at 10:39.78. Bearcat Matthew Holloway earned gold in the 110 meter hurdles at 15.8. The Bluffs’ 4x800 meter relay team crossed the finish line in the lead as Matthew Barraza, Shane Burkey, Collin Maag and Matthew Richardson took the honors with a total time of 8:47.40.

The competition was even stiffer on the girls side as a total of nine teams competed. Kearney earned the most points and was the winner at 133. Northwest was second with 99. York third at 98, Millard West fourth at 70, Scottsbluff fifth with 41, North Platte sixth with 30, Alliance seventh with 23, Hastings eighth with 18, and Gering ninth at 15 points.

Gering and Scottsbluff girls had some second placers, with Scottsbluff’s Noe Taylor missing first place by .17 of a second in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:03.42. Scottsbluff girls took second in the 4x800 meter relay with a time of 10:26.4.

Gering head track coach Randy Plummer said “It was a chilly, windy day in North Platte. The competition at this meet is always very tough, especially for the girls. When you bring in Class A schools such as Millard West and Kearney, it is very difficult to place. The coaching staff was pleased with the competitive spirit of our athletes; however, the team was not able to score many points. We move on to the Mitchell Invitational on Thursday.”

Scottsbluff’s head track coach Jim Barker reflected “We had a great day. I think we probably went above and beyond what we anticipated. We were solid in just about every track event and we had kids come through in every field event so overall it was a solid team performance.

Gering will next perform at the Mitchell Invite today. Scottsbluff will travel to the Broken Bow track meet on Friday to compete.
