Scottsbluff girls hand shutout loss to Gering girls’ soccer
     2015-04-23      By Philip Eckerberg
The Scottsbluff Bearcat girls’ soccer team shut out the Gering Bulldogs 3-0 on Monday. It was a cool and breezy evening, more like fall football weather than the expected warm spring day. That did not stop the soccer girls from putting forth their best efforts on the field of play. Gering hosted the game at Memorial Stadium next to Gering Junior High.

Bearcat Kelli Wentz struck the blow against the Bulldogs scoring early in the first half. Wentz nearly made a second goal at the end of the first half but was called for off sides and the goal did not count. Wentz struck again at 17:16 to go in the second half assisted by Morgan Smith. Kaylee Bentley took a pass from Smith and booted it into the net for a third Scottsbluff goal with 1:45 to go in the game.

The Dawgs just never managed much offense and they had a mere three shots vs twenty-six for Scottsbluff. Scottsbluff controlled the ball and the game.

Scottsbluff Head Coach Chad Larson said “I think our defense really stepped up tonight. There are some pretty young kids back there but I thought they played very well. They organized things for us and that led into our midfield and we got build from the back. We played from our midfield to our strikers and they kicked some good balls up there, it worked out for us tonight. We are 1-1 against Gering and we have one more meeting with them next week. It should be a good game.”

Scottsbluff is now 4-6 on the season and 1-4 in the district. Gering is now 4-9 on the season and 1-4 in the district. In other action Gering played Newcastle Wyoming at home last Thursday in a rain soaked contest. The Bulldogs were victorious getting a 4-1 win over Newcastle. Gering will play Scottsbluff on Tuesday next week.

Scottsbluff was scheduled for a game against Newcastle last Tuesday but results were not yet available at press time. Scottsbluff will play Torrington on Friday and Gering on Tuesday. All of the schedules are currently very flexible due to bad weather.
