Although the Morrill golf tournament got started late because of frost, nine teams from around the Panhandle made a strong showing.
“We got going shortly after nine Tuesday morning and it turned into a beautiful day,” said Morrill Activities Director Tom Peacock. “The weather was great, although the wind picked up in the afternoon.”

Bridgeport won the tournament with 353, followed by Chadron at 362, Kimball at 376, Crawford at 383, Gordon-Rushville at 401, Hemingford at 429, and Gering JV in seventh at 456. Mitchell finished in eighth place with a 459 team score and Morrill came in ninth at 469.

The individual top 10 scores had Chadron’s Keenan Johnson in first place with an 81 score. Once stroke behind at 82 were Bridgeport’s Eric Stevens and Kimball’s Jordan Greenwood. Hemingford’s Jacob Horstman took fourth at 84, followed by Cole Retchless of Bridgeport and Jayden Stack of Chadron, both with 87. Crawford’s Colton Micheel was a stroke back at 88. The top 10 was rounded out with Taylor Janicek of Bridgeport with 90, and Todd Widener of Bridgeport and Kyle Spicer of Kimball, both at 94.

“We had some great golf and the kids had some good scores,” Peacock said. “Our kids are improving every week and were playing pretty consistent. And all the coaches were excited to see some good weather for play.”

Morrill only had one meet last week due to the weather, but will be in Scottsbluff for a meet on Monday.
