Rapid City sweeps Twilight Track Meet
     2015-04-30      By Philip Eckerberg
SCOTTSBLUFF Even though the local teams did not win, the team scoring and the competition were stiff as Scottsbluff’s Twilight Track Meet on Friday. Stevens High School, from Rapid City, S.D., was the big winner in both boys’ and girls’ competition. Scottsbluff boys came in second.

As a team, the boys from Stevens were first with 122 points. Scottsbluff was a close second at 119. Sidney was in third with 105 and Kelly Walsh was fourth at 79. Alliance came in at fifth place with 75.5; Chadron sixth at 59.5. Gering was seventh at 54; Bayard eighth at 27.

The Girls team scores saw Stevens at first with 165 points, Kelly Walsh in at second at 134; Scottsbluff in third with 104.5; Sidney fourth at 89; Gering in fifth with 47; Alliance sixth at 46.5; Bayard seventh at 40.5 and Chadron in at eighth with 17.5 points.

Despite the intense competition from out of state schools, there were still plenty of local winners to cheer for. Scottsbluff’s Matthew Barraza kept the gold at home with a win in the 800 in 2:00.45. Bearcat Josh Hergenreder crossed the finish line in the lead finishing the 3200 in just 10:33.66. Gering Bulldog Esai Hernandez gave the Gering boys their lone win of the day in the Discus with a distance of 150-07.

On the girls side Bayard’s Jessi Smith proved that she can run with and beat the girls from the big schools taking gold in the 400 58.8 and the 800 at 2:23.24. Welcome to small town Nebraska. Scottsbluff’s Whitney Riesen came in first in the 3200 with a time of 12:15.7. Gering girl’s lone win came in the 4x800 relay with Victoria Schwartz, Lauren Shaul, Rebekah Rawlings, and Kali Rimington carrying the baton to the line in 10:10.99. Tiersa Darley gave Scottsbluff one more win in the Pole Vault, topping 9-03.

Scottsbluff head coach Jim Barker was disappointed with the results. “I think all in all we had an average day on both sides, both boys and girls,” he said. “I felt like in a lot of cases we just did not show up to compete very well. On the other hand we did a good job in some events. We just need to do a better job as a team showing up to compete. I think I can say for the coaching staff that we were a little disappointed with the boy’s outcome. We just did not feel like our boys competed like they should have, like the week before in Alliance. We have some things to work out, we have plenty of time, we just need to show up every time and compete. We have Western Conference on Friday so we will see what happens there. Our big three meets are left on the schedule, GNAC, districts, and state. We always point towards districts so hopefully we had our off meet at Twilight. It is better to have things go not as planned at that meet so we can correct things and be on target the rest of the season.”

Gering Head Coach Randy Plummer said “We had several athletes achieve season-best performances at the Twilight Meet. We have qualified several athletes for the Best in the West meet to be held Tuesday at Bearcat Stadium. Friday will be the Western Conference Meet also to be held at Bearcat Stadium. At this time of the season, the ultimate goal is to prepare for the B6 District meet and a chance to compete at the State Track Meet.”
