Scottsbluff girls split final match
     2015-05-21      By Jerry Purvis    news@geringcitizen.com
The Scottsbluff girls’ tennis team split their matches with Ogallala on May 14 as they prepare for the upcoming state tournament.
The Lady Bearcats were again strong at the singles positions as No. 1 Zoe Holscher blanked Ogallala’s Maddie Herman 6-0, 6-0. Christian Villarreal at No. 2 singles also posted a convincing win, 6-1, 6-0 over Courtney Moore.

The doubles positions were where the Bearcats were unable to pull out wins. No. 1 doubles Rachel Hancock and Alisha Huynh went down 0-6, 1-6 to Ogallala’s Maaika Mestl and Sophia Arensdorf. At the No. 2 doubles position, Barbara Calvert and Moriah Wyre lost 0-6, 2-6 to Katie Bush and Keauna Jenkins.

Scottsbluff Coach Cassie Behnke said the Ogallala dual was a good final tune-up prior to the state tournament, scheduled for May 21 – 22 in Lincoln.

After seeing the pairings, Behnke said they received good draws and have a good possibility of getting some first round wins and performing well as a team.

“It’s kind of funny that our No. 2 doubles team faces Gering in the first round,” she said. “We drive more than 300 miles to play each other when we’ve been doing it all season.”

Gering will also be heading to the state tournament. Coach Justin Reinmuth said this has been a rebuilding year for the Bulldogs, who saw their last action on May 2 at the McCook Invitational.
“Since then we’ve been working on keeping the ball in play,” Reinmuth said. “We’ve been making a lot of fundamental mistakes.”

He said no team is ever 100 percent ready for state, but they’re doing their best and will see what happens when they get to Lincoln.
“Eastern Nebraska schools will be our biggest challenge,” he added. “A lot of those programs get to play year round and that changes things.”

The way the seeding works for the state tournament has lower ranked teams playing against top seeds in the first round. “I’m hoping the girls can take some wins while we’re there, but it’s always tough competition,” Reinmuth said.

Scottsbluff’s first round pairings at the state tournament in No. 1 singles has #3 Zoe Holscher taking on Elizabeth Weed of Holdrege. In the No. 2 singles position, #8 Christina Villarreal is up against Emilye Vales of Wilbur-Clatonia.

On the doubles side, the No. 1 team of Sarah Cloud and Stacea Pauli are paired against Alexis Brouillette and Brenda Tran of Hastings St. Cecilia. No. 2 doubles is a Scottsbluff-Gering match as Alisha Huynh and Rachel Hancock battle Kaitlyn Wagoner and Annastacia Cowan of Gering.

Carolyn Howton, Gering’s No. 1 singles player, sees action against #12 Kendra McGinnis of Nebraska City in the fifth match of the day. Gering freshman Sheridan Blanco at No. 2 singles will face #9 Jenna Mu of Brownwell-Talbot/Concordia.

Gering’s other doubles matches has No. 1 Samantha Gutherless and Annessa Escamilla against the #5 Holdrege team of Annie Allmand and Alexa Obermeier.
