Gering B&C Steel defeats Spearfish and Alliance

It was another busy week for the Gering B&C Steel Junior Legion baseball team as they opened with an 11-5 road win against Gordon on Wednesday.
Gering scored 3 runs in the first and 6 in the second to take a 9-0 lead. Gordon got some traction in the third with 4 runs to close the gap to 5. Gering players crossed the plate once each in the fifth and sixth for all their 11 runs of the game. Gordon made 1 more run in the sixth and no one scored in the seventh.

Dalton Scott was the winning pitcher going for 6 innings while making 1 strikeout, 5 walks, 10 hits, and allowed 5 runs. Mike Gutherless pitched the last inning, made 1 strikeout and allowed 1 hit.
At the plate there were 12 team hits with Austin Abbott and Riley Grote making 2 each. Dalton Scott had 1 hit for a double. Chris Palomo, Kaden Leonard, Lance Garcia, Nate Blackos, Brayden Tarr, Dylan Radzymski, and Mike Gutherless each contributed a single hit. Gutherless, Radzmyski, Leonard, Scott, and Abbott had 1 RBI. Runs were scored by Palomo with 3, Grote and Gutherlesss had 2, Radzmyski, Blackos, Scott, and Abbott had 1.

The luck ran out on Thursday as Gering traveled to North Platte and got beat 12-4 by the First Nationals. Gering led 2-1 at the end of the first inning and tacked on 1 more run in the second to get a 3-1 lead. North Platte scored 3 in the third to take a 4-3 lead. Gering tied in the fourth with 1 more runner crossing the plate. North Platte scored 8 in the fifth to seal the deal of the 12-4 win.
The Gering bats were quiet with just 2 single hits made by Abbott and Scott. Grote, Montanez, Scott, and Abbott made the 4 runs. Abbott took the pitching loss going 4.1 innings with 1 strikeout, 1 walk, 9 hits, 12 runs, and 3 earned runs.
Gering bounced back on Friday with a 10-2 Chadron tournament win over Alliance. Gering scored 1 in the first and 3 in the third to Alliance’s 1 in the third. Gering scored 5 more in the fourth and each team scored 1 in the fifth for the 10-2 Gering win.
Luciano Montanez was the winning pitcher going the full 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, 5 walks, 4 hits, and 2 runs. At the plate Gering managed 6 hits with Palomo and Quinten Janecek getting 2, one of Janecek’s was a double. Scott and Tarr made singles. Abbott Scored 3 runs, with Palomo and Gutherless getting 2 runs, Radzymski and Montanez each got 1 run.

Gering faced McCook on Saturday morning and took a hard 14-2 loss. McCook opened strong with 6 runs in the first inning and 4 in the second. Gering made 1 run in the second for a 10-1 score. McCook scored 2 runs in the third and 2 in the fourth, Gering made 1 more run in the fourth to end the game.

Offensively Gering managed 5 hits with Garrett Conn, Blackos, Tarr, Radzymski, and Montanez getting 1.Quentin Onstott and Kyle Schroeder split the 2 runs. Blackos was the losing pitcher with 3 strikeouts, 3 walks, 13 hits, 14 runs, and 12 earned runs.
Saturday afternoon Gering suffered another big loss to Valentine by a 15-3 score. Gering got 2 runs in the top of the first but Valentine responded with 6. Gering got 1 more run in the second and Valentine got 2. Valentine got 7 runs in the third inning for the ten run rule win.
Tarr took the loss on the mound but only pitched .2 innings. He had 2 strikeouts, 5 walks, 2 hits, 6 runs, and 3 earned runs. Conn pitched 1.1 innings with 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, 1 hit, 2 runs, and 1 earned run. Onstott pitched and had 6 walks, 3 hits, and 7 runs. Batting was down with just 4 hits, 2 by Montanez, 1 by Leonard and 1 by Conn. Leonard, Conn, and Montanez each scored a run.
Gering traveled to Spearfish on Monday for a doubleheader. B&C Steel won the first game 10-2. Gering had 12 hits and 1 error. Gering lost the second game 13-3 with 9 hits and 4 errors.

“Once again we got some experience for the younger guys that is very critical going into this next week,” Head Coach Pat O’Boyle said. “We have districts in a week so it is very critical we get chemistry built and put the finishing touches on some things. We are trying to find guys to put in the best spots to make us the best that we can be.”
