Zephyrs win home tournament

The Westco Zephyrs Senior Legion Baseball team started out the week with an 8-3 loss last Wednesday at North Platte. The Zs scored 5 in the first inning vs 1 for North Platte for an early lead. The Zephyrs picked up 2 more in the in the second but North Platte closed the gap with 4 runs. Westco made 1 run in the third and North Platte took the lead with 5 runs. The Zephyrs scored single runs in the fifth and seventh for a tie. North Platte got 1 in the eighth for the 11-10 win.

Westco threw 5 pitchers at North Platte with Evan Hughes getting the loss in 1.1 innings with 5 walks, 2 hits, and 5 runs. Brad Divan pitched 1 innings with 3 walks, 5 hits, and 5 runs. Trevor Garcia was .2 innings with 2 walks, 1 hit, and 1 run. Alexis Gurrola went 1.2 innings with 2 strikeouts and 2 walks. Traceton Halley lasted 3 innings with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.
The Zs managed 9 hits with Ty Benson, Divan, and Garcia getting 2 each, getting 1 hit apiece was Jackson Hinze, Josh Sturgeon, and Halley. Benson scored 4 runs, Garcia had 2, and crossing the plate once each was Cooper Buchhammer, Halley, Eric Olsen, and Divan.
The Zephyrs got a 6-5 win over Colorado’s Thompson Valley on Friday evening. Thompson started with a 3-2 lead in the first inning and then tacked on 1 more each in both the fourth and sixth. The Zephyrs tied it at 5 in the bottom with 3 runs and then got the winning run in the ninth.

Evan Hughes was credited with the win pitching the last 3 innings with 5 strikeouts, 2 walks, 2 hits and no runs. Garcia pitched the first 6 innings with 3 strikeouts, 2 walks, 10 hits, and 5 runs.
The Zephyrs had 9 hits with Robie Cantril and Garcia getting 2 each while Hinze, Benson, Olsen, Halley, and Buchhammer made 1.

Hinze, Divan, Andy Van Amburg, Hughes, Garcia and Halley scored runs.
Westco played Thompson Valley again on Saturday morning and posted a 6-2 win. The Zs scored 1 in the first, 2 in the third, and 3 in the fifth. Thompson’s only runs came in the sixth with 2. Alexis Gurrola was the winning pitcher with 2 strikeouts, 3 walks, 4 hits, and 2 runs but no earned runs.
At the plate Westco connected 8 times with Cantril getting 2, one a double, and Garcia getting 2 with 1 a triple. Halley had just 1 hit but it was a biggie, a home run with 2 batted in. Hughes, Sturgeon, and Benson each had 1 hit. Hinze crossed the plate 3 times with Divan, Garcia, and Halley scoring once each.
Saturday evening the Zephyrs had a 10-9 close call win over Windsor, Colo. Windsor scored 1 in the first inning and the Zs answered with 4 runs. Windsor tied in the top of the second with 3 runs but Westco retook the lead with 2 more runs. The Zephyrs added on 2 more in the fourth and Windsor did the same in the fifth. Windsor pulled ahead in the top of sixth with 3 runs but the Zs made 1 run of their own for a tie at 9. The Zephyrs nailed 1 more run in the eighth for the 10-9 win.

Olsen pitched the first 5 innings getting 4 strikeouts, but making 6 walks, allowing 5 hits and 6 runs all of them earned. Hinze pitched the last 3 innings and was credited with the win. Hinze made 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, allowed 3 hits, and 3 runs none of them earned.
Sunday afternoon the Zephyrs got a big 13-4 win against D’Evelyn, Colo. D’Evelyn opened with 2 in the first but the Zephyrs came up with a big inning with 9 runs in the second. D’Evelyn made 2 in the third and Westco made 3. The Zephyrs finished with 1 in the fourth to end the game.

Buchhammer was the winning pitcher lasting 3 innings. He made 2 strikeouts, 2 walks, allowing 7 hits, and 4 runs, 2 earned. Halley finished the last 2 innings with 3 strikeouts and 2 hits.
The Zs had 13 hits with Garcia getting 3 of them including a home run. Halley, Sturgeon, and Hinze had 2 hits. Cantril, Benson, Hughes, and Buchhammer each had 1 hit. Benson scored 3 runs, Hinze and Garcia put 2 each on the board, while Cantril, Divan, Van Amburg, Hughes, and Halley each made 1.

“We played well all 4 games ended up going 4-0 and it was good competition for us,” Zephyrs head coach Mark Moran said. “Districts are a couple of weeks out we will be playing some tough competition, lots of good opponents. We will keep trying to improve.”
