Gering hosts Class B Area 7 Junior Legion baseball tournament
     2015-07-09      By Philip Eckerberg
The Gering B&C Steel Junior Legion baseball team gets to host the Nebraska class B area 7 District tournament this year. The tournament will be held on July 10 to 14 in Gering. The teams will find plenty to do as they will be here during Oregon Trail Days as well, although it might be tough find a motel room.

The tournament is double elimination which that each team has to be beat twice to be out or that if you have one bad game you can still fight your way back. The Chadron Junior team earned the first seed in the tournament. Ogallala is second, Alliance is third, Sidney is fourth, Gering is 5th, and Hershland is sixth.
The tournament opens its first round with three games on Friday. Chadron and Hershland play at 1 p.m., Alliance and Sidney will take on each other at 4 p.m. and Gering challenges Ogallala at 7 p.m. The next round will depend on who wins on Friday with the Championship game being played on Tuesday. The winner will get to go the state tournament in Bennington.

Gering will also see benefits from the tournament as motel rooms are rented, gas is purchased, and restaurants are visited. There will players, coaches, and fans traveling to Gering from the Panhandle for these games. If you see them, make them feel welcome.

“It is big because we get to play in front of our home crowd, and we don’t have to travel. It is our home field so we feel very comfortable in it,” Gering B&C Steel Head Coach Pat O’Boyle said. “We feel excited to be able to host districts I feel that is an advantage for us. The host of the tournament rotates between towns every year and it was our turn.”

If you get a chance during and after Oregon Trail days come out and watch the action as there is sure to be some quality baseball played.
