Radio-control aviation fans flock to Fun Fly

The Platte Valley RC’ers hosted the 26th annual Fun Fly at the old Mitchell airport on Saturday. More than 200 radio-controlled miniature airplane enthusiasts enjoyed a hot day of flying and showing off their model planes.

John Carlson of the RC’ers said they hold the event every year on the last full weekend of July. “There are people out here most any Saturday when the weather is nice, but we always hold our big Fun Fly event in the middle of summer,” he said. “Several instructors are usually here if people want to learn how to fly. People are welcome to come watch and they can also inquire about how to get started.”
Carlson said many of the flyers who came to the Fun Fly event are members of the Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA). “We have a lot of local folks involved but this year we are getting good support from Colorado.”

Carlson said flyers came from Sidney and eastern Wyoming as well. “I’ve been doing this for 21 years,” he said. “I fly mostly sport models and trainer airplanes to teach students and help people get involved.”

Carlson said he enjoys flying model airplanes because of the thrill. “Who doesn’t like watching airplanes?” he asked. “I think it is just amazing they can fly.”

Secretary/Treasurer for the RC’ers, Russ Colby, said he has been involved with model planes for 35 years. “I got into this from my family,” Colby said. “My brother and my dad were into model airplanes.”

Colby said the Fun Fly is “Just a gathering to come fly. This isn’t a competition. We just come to have a good time and look at the airplanes.”

Colby said other AMA events are more serious and there are various categories people compete in. “There are world events and competitions,” he said. “Some of the categories are helicopters, sail planes and scale planes that look almost real.

“Most of our guys are relaxed and just enjoy flying. We might have some friendly competition, but we don’t do sanctioned contests.”
