Road trip unkind to Bulldogs
     2015-09-17      By The Gering Citizen
Gering was on the road Friday, unable to pick up its first win of the season in a disappointing non-conference loss to the Lexington Minutemen, 31-0.

“I thought we fought hard in the first half,” said Gering Head Coach Todd Ekart. “We had some trouble moving the ball on offense, and gave up a couple big plays on defense. I thought we would have a better second half, but the effort was not there. I feel we took a step back.”

Bulldogs senior QB Austin Hoffman managed six completions off 13 attempts for 58 yards. Leading the receiving corps, senior wide receiver Sonny Salazar had one reception for 21 yards. Rushing wise, Gering (0-3) had 31 carries for 51 yards. Leading the way on the ground, junior Riley Grote had 10 carries for 62 yards, and senior running back Deion Contreras had 13 carries for 19 yards.
As a team, Gering ran 48 plays for 248 all-purpose yards, and nine first downs.

Gering plays Northwest High School at home on Friday. The kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. In its last game, the Northwest Vikings (2-1) handled Alliance, 55-19.

In preparing for the Vikings, Ekart plans to “add some wrinkles to kick start the offense, and defensively, we are preparing for a really good passing team with a tremendous quarterback. We are mostly just trying to get the excitement back we played with the first game,” he said.
