CHADRON- Gering runners repeated as the winners of the Chadron High School Invitational Cross Country Meet Saturday.

Rebekah Rawlings and Xavier Arellano each chopped four seconds off last year’s winning times while crossing the finish line ahead of the pack again this year. There were 56 girls, and 78 boys in the high school competition.
Rawlings, a junior, completed this year’s race in 20 minutes, 11 seconds and Arellano, a sophomore, finished in 18:03.

Second place in both races went to Mitchell runners. Celeste Cardona was the girls’ runner-up in 21:16 and Edward Grentz was the boys’ No. 2 finisher in 18:12.
Both the girls and the boys ran five kilometers.

This was the fourth straight year Arellano won the Chadron Meet. He was the middle school champion in seventh and eighth grade, and won the high school title as a freshman in 2014.

“This is my favorite course,” Arellano said. “That’s probably because I have always won here.”

Despite his win over Grentz on Saturday, he said the Mitchell senior still has a 3-2 lead in their head-to-head meetings.

Rawlings said she also likes the Chadron State course “because you can almost always see the finish line while you’re running.”

Arellano led the Gering boys, who finished with 37 points, and took their third straight team title at the Chadron Meet. Bulldogs Logan Moravec, Jacey Shaul, Cortez Arellano, and Tanner Walker finished among the top 11, individually.

Mitchell as a team finished second with 72 points. Besides Grentz, Chase Watson finished fifth overall, and Cody Mueller finished seventh.

Two entries from Red Cloud High at Pine Ridge, S.D., Jack Fast Wolf and Dylan Tobacco finished third and fourth with times of 18:16 and 18:26, respectively.
Despite Rawlings’ victory, the Gering girls had their two-year reign as the team champions snapped by Todd County High at Mission, S.D., which had 45 points, 13 fewer than Gering.

The Falcons’ Kelsey Herman, Caelyn Valandra and Kari Prue, finished third, fourth and fifth, respectively, and teammates Nicole Patton and Armory Prue, were seventh and eighth.

Crawford’s Austin Kennedy was the first runner from along Highway 20 to complete the boys’ course. He was 10th in 19:04.

Dexter Applegarth was Chadron’s leader. He finished in 16 th place, and crossed the line in 19:47. His Cards’ teammate Josh Hyer placed 19th in 19:55. Other Cards’ top finishers included Seth Sloan, 34th, 20:46; Caleb Hill, 36th, 20:51; and Jared Fernau, 40th, 21:05.

The Lady Cards had four girls place among the top 21. Greta Welch led the way with a 14th place finish (23:38) while Alison Gardner was 15th, one second behind. Other Chadron team members and their times Julianne Dickerson, 18th, 24:02; Anabel Gardner, 21st, 24:39; and Mande Wollesen, 36th, 26:21.
