Scottsbluff racquet squad finishes third at Hastings

While it wasn’t their best performance on the courts, the Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team did manage to finish third in the seven-team field at the Hastings Invitational on Sept. 26.

Scottsbluff, a Class B school, posted 20 team points for third, behind Class A schools Kearney in first with 34 points and Grand Island with 30.

Scottsbluff placed third behind strong performances from its No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles positions. No. 2 singles Sam McCaslin won four of his six matches on the day. And the No. 2 doubles team of Patrick Madden and Connor Muhr also posted a 4-2 record.
Scottsbluff Coach Maddie Johnson said the No. 2 doubles team was down 0-5 in their last match to come back to win it.

Scottsbluff also posted 3-3 records from Soren Mercer-Smith at No. 1 singles and from the No. 1 doubles team of Owen Parra and Brady Sindt.

“Our No. 2 singles and No. 2 doubles players did really well and helped our team place third,” Johnson said. “We will need this momentum heading into GNAC this weekend. We need to do well this weekend if we want some of our teams to get seeded at state.”
Earlier in the week, on Sept. 22, Scottsbluff came away with a convincing 8-1 victory over visiting Cheyenne South. No. 1 singles player Soren Mercer-Smith was the only Bearcat to drop his match by a 4-8 score. Sam McCaslin at No. 2 singles posted an 8-1 victory, No. 3 Brady Sindt and No. 4 Owen Parra were 8-0 winners, and No. 5 Conner Muhr and No. 6 Patrick Madden were both 8-1 winners.

All three Bearcat doubles teams were victorious over Cheyenne South. No. 1 Brady Sindt and Owen Parra were 8-2. No. 2 Patrick Madden and Conner Muhr were 8-1 and No. 3 Gunnar Buchhammer and Mason Ramig went 8-2.
