Coaching award goes to Gable

Assistant Coach Stevie Gable
Stevie Gable will be presented the Western Conference Female Assistant Coach of the Year for Volleyball for 2014-15 before the Boys title game at the Western Conference basketball tourney on Saturday, Dec. 5, at the Gering High School gym.

This is the second time for Gable. She received the same award in 2010-2011.

Gable said, “I was drawn into coaching volleyball because of my love for the game as a player. “

She was the junior varsity coach for one year and head varsity coach in Bayard for three years before moving to Gering to teach and coach. She started at the junior high, where she coached seventh grade for two years. She then moved up to coach the junior varsity team for six years – with one of those years as the interim head coach.

This past year, she was conspicuously absent from courtside. “I decided to quit coaching this season because my daughter is a seventh grader,” she said. “And I felt it was important for her to look up in the stands at her volleyball games and see me there supporting her.”

In the classroom, Gable has taught Family and Consumer Sciences for 15 years - nine years at Gering High. This year, she also started teaching one Culinary Arts class.

Gable played for the Gering Bulldogs in the mid-1990s, and said she was happy her own children will get to experience those same feelings of pride at Gering.

“I love the different relationships you get to build and have with your student-athletes. You spend a lot of time with the girls in and out of the classroom, and you get to know their strengths and weaknesses on and off the court,” she said. “I love the game of volleyball because it’s a game of strategy and finesse. You have to constantly be anticipating what the other team is doing and how you are going to respond to that as an individual and as a team. The game has gotten faster and faster and teams continue to get better every single year.”
