Lady Bulldogs drop state tourney opener

GRAND ISLAND — The “Island” is far from paradise for the Gering Lady Bulldogs.

For two straight years the Gering Lady Bulldogs went to the state volleyball tournament only to be sent home after the first game.
Last Thursday, The Lady Bulldogs opened the 2011 state tournament against Elkhorn. There was a lot of hard going on but Elkhorn prevailed in three sets, 25-18, 25-21, 25-14.

“I thought the kids fought hard,” said Gering coach Craig Schadwinkel. “They were not used to the big-time atmosphere. I don’t think that our serve-receive game was as strong as what it has been all year but you have to credit Elkhorn with some great serves.”
Schadwinkel said he thought his Lady Bulldogs passed well and got the ball to the net and even “stayed right with” Elkhorn.

“This group of seniors is a really special group. Number one, my daughter is on it. Number two, they are like an extended family because we have been together for so long. They have been playing since the fourth grade and I have been coaching them. I am really pleased with what they have done,” said Schadwinkel.

Kayleigh Schadwinkel led the Lady Bulldogs with had eight kills while Morgan Broussard posted seven kills. Darci Kaufman had 22 digs for Gering while teammate Morgan Greene had five blocks at the net.
The Gering Lady Bulldogs finished the 2011 season with a record of 29-7 with eight of the players graduating this year.

“They will leave a huge void for us to fill and the younger classmen have a lot to live up to and that is what our tradition is about – making that step to a higher level. The younger kids are going to have to step up and go. We do have great talent left in the program. It is just a matter of them forming their identity now,” said Schadwinkel.

Gering won four straight Western Conference title and won their district twice in a row.

Schadwinkel said he does plan on returning to coach volleyball next season at Gering High.

“Today, I told the seniors that if you have no regrets then you cannot leave this facility a loser. It does not hurt as bad to lose here as it does back home because you have extended your season. It is a life-long memory and a huge achievement that a lot of kids don’t have and our seniors were able to do it twice.”
