The high school competitive speech season started with a bang as Scottsbluff hosted the first meet of the year on Saturday, Jan. 9, at Bluffs Middle School. Scottsbluff received the Class A/B runner-up award, and Gering was named the team champion. Though it’s still early, both teams showed great potential for the season.

Gering coach Tyler Thompson saw the meet as a great season-opener. “There were many victories and some setbacks as well, just like any meet,” he said. “The kids were running their pieces for the first time and getting feedback. We’re just looking for improvement and looking forward to a great season,” he said.

Gering senior Allie Baird, who placed third in Poetry at the NSAA State Championship last season, competes again in Poetry this year, as well as the Persuasive Speaking and Oral Interpretation of Drama (OID) events. “The Scottsbluff meet is always a really good stepping stone for the rest of the season,” she said. “It’s good feedback to help improve our pieces as well.”

Ten teams were in attendance, including Scottsbluff, Gering, Mitchell, Bayard, Gordon-Rushville, Kimball, Alliance, Ogallala, Chadron, and Hemingford. Hemingford received the small school runner-up award, and Kimball was the small school champion.

First place finishers for Scottsbluff were in Duet Acting, Humorous Prose, and Serious Prose. First place finishes for Gering were in OID, Poetry, and Persuasive Speaking.

Scottsbluff sophomore Ashlynn Haun is a veteran to the team, who took first place in Humorous Prose on Saturday. “I’m completely overjoyed,” she said. “The competition was really tough, and on another day, any of the top finalists could have finished first.”

Area speech teams will compete on a mostly weekly basis at several meets around the state, culminating in the Nebraska State Championship Meet held in Kearney on March 23.

Both Gering and Scottsbluff will next compete in Gordon-Rushville on Saturday, Jan. 16, and will be back at home, in Gering, on the Jan 23.
