Bulldog wrestlers suffer 3rd big loss
     2016-02-05      By Frank Marquez    editor@geringcitizen.com
Frank Marquez/Gering Citizen Gering’s Carmelo Ozuna, at 160 pounds, fights to keep Josh Kingsly down on the mat at a home dual with Torrington. Ozuna won the match by fall.
Gering sophomore Carmelo Ozuna (160) pinned Torrington’s Josh Kingsley, getting the Bulldogs’ first win after nine matches in front of a sparse crowd on Senior Night at Gering High School’s last home dual of the season.

Garret Allbaugh, Antonio Murrillo and Deion Contreras were Gering seniors listed on the roster who were recognized.

Gering has been on a skid of late with blowout losses against Scottsbluff (52-15) and Alliance (64-9). A charged up Ozuna came out in the first period, slamming Kingsley to the mat. The official called a timeout giving both wrestlers a breather. Ozuna remained the aggressor putting Kingsley on his back in the second period.

Cody Ybarra, at 170 pounds, added Gering’s second consecutive win against the Trailblazers after a 9-2 decision over Alejandro Chavarria.

Through 11 matches, the score was 50-9, favoring the Trailblazers.

Gering’s Keegan Wurdeman at 220 pounds represented the Bulldog’s only other victory for the night, pinning Jay Lopez after 93 seconds in the first period, to make the final score 66-15.

The dual started out at heavyweight. Torrington’s Jacob Wamboldt earned the pin over freshman Max Closson, which set the tone for the Blazers. Overall, Torrington scored 60 points on two forfeits at 106 pounds and 220 pounds, and eight falls.

At 126 pounds, Gering sophomore Julian Corona gave one of the Bulldogs’ stronger showings, losing by decision to Matt Garcia, 8-3.

Over the weekend, Gering travelled to the Valley Tournament in Greeley, Colo., finishing in 14th place out of 18 teams with 28 points.

“The tournament is always tough and this year was no different,” said Gering Head Coach J.J. Behrens. “There were seven teams ranked in the top 10 among their various classes. Cody Ybarra placed 5-6 th; he was unable to wrestle his last match due to match limit. We only have eight more practices until districts. We will head back to the mat room and continue to fix the little things.”

Gering was scheduled to wrestle Sidney and Fort Morgan (Colo.) at a triangular on Feb. 4, and at Southeast Consolidated School on Saturday, Feb. 6. The B-8 District Tournament is Feb. 12-13.
