Seacats dive into state tourney

Ken Kurtz/Spectrum Photography Ian Galindo will be among the busier Seacat swimmers at the state competition in Lincoln this weekend. He is slated to participate in the Boys 200-Yard Medley Relay; the Boys 200-Yard IM; the Boys 100-Yard Freestyle; the Boys 200-Yard Freestyle Relay and the Boys 400-Yard Freestyle Relay.
The Scottsbluff/Gering Seacats swimming and diving team is in Lincoln this weekend, where the state tournament gets underway Feb. 25-27 at the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

“I feel really good about the team that’s going” said Seacats Head Coach Mike Hayhurst. “We have 17 kids, which is a really good number. We’re in about 15 different events and two divers will also compete. Both of them qualified for state quite easily.”

Four or five members of the boys’ team have also been seeded in top 16 in their events. Plus, two of the boys’ relay teams are also seeded in the top 16.

“I think we have a good shot at getting into the top 10 on the boys’ side,” Hayhurst said. “We haven’t done that in few years.”

There are no classes in the state swimming tournament, so the Class B Seacats will compete against much larger Class A schools from the Lincoln and Omaha areas.

Hayhurst said a number of alternates will also be at the tournament, giving them the opportunity to see what the met is like. But the core of the team have all been to the tournament before, which will help in team management.

Hayhurst said it would be a pretty big challenge for the three girls’ relay teams to place in one of those events. “One of our qualifiers isn’t going because she’s also on the Drill Team, who are in Orlando,” he said. “But this gives some opportunities for some other kids to go and experience the state meet and use that knowledge for an even better meet next year.”

Scheduled events include:

Girls Diving: Rosa Garcia, sophomore.
