Bearcats head to state with win over Raiders

The Bearcat boys travel to Lincoln next weekend for the Nebraska State High School Tournament.  
The Scottsbluff boys’ basketball team is headed to the state tournament in Lincoln next week after winning the Class B-6 Tournament for the sixth year running on March 1.

A packed house turned out March 1 in Ogallala to watch the Bearcats play Sidney for the third time this season as Scottsbluff posted a 51-36 win over the Red Raiders.

After falling to Sidney by just two points a couple of weeks before, the Bearcats were ready to turn it around in the B-6 final.

The win gives Scottsbluff the automatic berth to the state tournament, where the Bearcats will be the No. 1 seed going into the first round. In spite of the loss, Sidney was one of the wildcard qualifiers for state.

“Overall, our district is really tough and we played a very good Sidney team,” Bearcat Head Coach Tony Siske said. “It was a real battle.”

Sidney held an 11-4 advantage in the first quarter before Scottsbluff caught fire with an 8-0 run and closed the quarter with a 12-11 lead.

“Once we got into an offensive flow, we started to get some baskets,” Siske said. “We continued to play good defense and take away what Sidney was trying to do. Overall it was a team effort to pick up the win.”

Bearcat junior Dru Kuxhausen led all scorers in the game with 21 points, including a 3-pointer. He also finished 8-of-9 at the foul line. Jonah Wright and Landon Walker both added nine points. All of Wright’s points were 3-pointers.

“This is pretty exciting for our kids,” said Scottsbluff Activities Director Dave Hoxworth. “Coach Siske puts a lot of time and effort into the program, all the way from little kids up through high school. He does an exceptional job of developing relationships with the kids and I think they play really hard for him.”

Scottsbluff opens its run at the state tournament in Lincoln on Thursday, March 10 when the No. 1 seed Bearcats take on Platteview.
