With a total of 58 team points, the Gering speech team took second place at the 2016 Western Conference Speech Contest, two points behind host Sidney, which won the event with 60.

“I was pleased with how well we did,” said Coach Tyler Thompson. “The kids turned in some quality performances. Many of them said they had their best performances of the year.”

Scottsbluff’s Ashlynn Haun took first place in the Humorous Prose event, followed by Kielan Carlson of Mitchell in second.

Gering speakers also took the top spots in the Poetry event, with Tegan Murdock in first and Allie Baird in second.

Gering speakers also ranked high in the Informative Public Speaking event as Becky Boyd placed third and Nellie Kirk in fourth.

Gering placed three speakers in the Persuasive Speaking event, as Hadley Kirk finished in second and her younger sister Nellie Kirk was in third. Collin Potts took fourth. Allie Mekolon of Scottsbluff finished fifth and teammate Sam Willis took sixth.

Scottsbluff’s Sam Willis also placed second in Entertainment Speaking, while teammate Jace Henderson came in fifth and Gering’s Becky Boyd was sixth.

The Duet Acting event saw Gering’s Dawson Johns and Sydney Havengar placing fourth, followed in fifth by Hannah Plasencio and Ashley Jackson of Mitchell.

Two Gering teams placed in the Oral Interpretation of Drama event. Allie Baird, Davan Hawkins, Kegan Heilbrun, Carsyn Long and Collin Potts were in the top spot. In fifth was the team of Sheridan Blanco, Sydney Havengar, Dawson Johns, Michael Haywood and Nathan Prohs.

“We had overall good results,” Thompson said. “There wasn’t anything not to be pleased with, but we always find things to work on and improve.”

The Gering speakers will be in North Platte on March 5 for the Best of the West speech meet. Then they host the district tournament on Monday, March 14 at Gering High School. Thompson said they would love for the public to stop and watch the teams in action.

Gering is hosting three separate district tournaments that day with first rounds starting at 9 a.m. Gering is in the B-6 district. The C1-6 district will be represented by schools such as Kimball, Bridgeport, Gordon-Rushville and Ainsworth. The C2-6 district includes North Platte St. Patrick and Perkins County.

“It’s a very diverse group of teams that will be here,” Thompson said. “There will be some really great performances across a lot of different classes.”
