Regular speech season wraps up

As the end of the season approaches, coaches ponder who will be placed on their district rosters. Most districts will allow only two individuals and two groups in each event. When events are stacked with more than two that score well persistently, coaches have a hard time deciding which members to send to the district meet.

The last meet before districts this season was the “Best of the West” meet hosted in North Platte. Local Gering and Scottsbluff speech teams attended this meet. For some team members, this was the last meet of the year, for some seniors, the last of their speech career.

The season was successful for the Scottsbluff Bearcat speechletes, and first-year coaching team, head coach Whitney Gipe, and assistant coach Allison Areeda.

“This season was an incredible first run for Whitney and I. Our speechletes shattered our expectations with hard work, dedication and talent. We’ve held our own against several schools with years of experience and heavy talent,” says Areeda.

Two team members scored perfect days during the season. This means they scored a perfect 50 points and first place in every round and from every finals judge, taking first place at the meet.

Senior Katelyn Thompson received this honor at the Perkins County meet where she performed her Serious Prose piece “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks.”

Sophomore Ashlynn Haun received this honor at the Western Conference meet in Sidney where she performed her Humorous prose piece “Investment Dating.”

The team as a whole won the Gordon-Rushville meet with 55 points. This meet is also where the team took the most entries into finals with 14 entries. They also took home the most first place medals at the meet with four champions: juniors Emily Ostdiek in Persuasive, sophomore Faith Reisig in Humorous Prose, senior Nikki Mobley in Serious Prose, and senior Sam Willis in Entertainment Speaking.

These high-scoring meets made it difficult for the coaches to cut down the roster for the district competition, but those cuts had to come out at the beginning of the week, as the team with travel to Kearney on Monday, March 14 to compete the next day in their district.

Gering will also host their district meet on Monday. March 14. Both teams will take earning members to the state meet in Kearney the following week.
