Gering soccer teams stumble

Lisa Betz-Marquez/Gering Citizen Gering senior midfielder Javier Campos works the ball forward against the defensive rush from a North Platte defender in Tuesday’s match at Gering’s Memorial Stadium. Gering was blanked, 6-0.
The Gering boys’ soccer team failed to score a single goal against North Platte, getting blanked 6-0 in only the second match of the season at Memorial Stadium in Gering Tuesday night.

The Gering Bulldogs tried to rebound from a 2-0 loss to district rival Scottsbluff in the season opener, a home match on Saturday night.

“I was very pleased with how we played in the first half,” said Gering Coach Justin Clark. “We created several good chances, but could not quite connect the final pass to get a good shot on goal. Unfortunately, in the second half we had a couple of mistakes early that led to goals, and it snowballed from there.”

Gering goalie Chris Bartow had his hands full, literally, with North Platte players firing a total of 17 shots with nine on goal in the non-conference match.

In the match against the Bearcats, Gering’s Brent Barge had two shots on goal, while Nolan Nelson and Ty Romey had a shot each. Bartow gave a good effort on defense with four saves, effectively stopping three out of four shots on goal percentage wise.

Against North Platte, Bartow could only manage three saves, allowing six goals, with the flood of scoring coming from five different players in the second period. Bartow allowed only one shot to get past him the in first period.

On Gering’s offense, three shots on goal came from seniors Barge, Romey and Javier Campos.

Gering (0-2) was planning for a match against Cheyenne Central on March 24.

However, the match was postponed due to weather.

Meanwhile, the Gering girls’ soccer team mirrored boys action, dropping its first two games to Scottsbluff, 2-0, and North Platte, 7-0.

The Bulldog girls will take on Holdrege on March 28 (Monday night) at home.
