With more players showing up for golf, the Bayard boys’ golf team should be able to post some team scores for the 2016 season.

“We really didn’t have a team record last year because we only had two varsity golfers,” said Coach Jim Roberts. “This year we’ve gained a few players and are hopeful to post team scores and slowly improve as the season goes on.”

Both varsity players from last year, Manuel Acosta and Ethan Marker, return as seniors. The rest of the six-man field includes a sophomore and three freshmen.

“Our goal for the season is to make sure we have a full team at all the tournaments and be able to post team scores,” Roberts said. “We continue to work on our games so that by the end of the season, we’ll have a competitive team score when the district meet rolls around.”

This year’s district meet for Class C-5 is in Valentine. Roberts said the Prairie Club will host and is a “very nice, exclusive golf course,” which will be a great opportunity for his golfers. He added that depending on how the course is set up, it can be pretty difficult to play.

“Some of our freshmen are new to the game, so we work on the basics and learning the rules,” Roberts said. “The golf that most people play on weekends is not the same game you play in an actual tournament.”

Robert said the returning seniors have game experience and should provide leadership for the younger players. One of the freshman also has some experience, so should be able to be included on the varsity squad.

Roberts has been coaching golf for both boys and girls for at least 25 years. He said that when Bayard completed its Chimney Rock Golf Course, the school board added golf as a sport and he was assigned as coach.
