The Gering Girls’ soccer team Head Coach Lisa Freeburg said the Lady Bulldogs, so far this season, are “starting to put things together and playing well.”

A 4-3 winner on the road Tuesday night against the Torrington Trail Blazers, the Bulldogs, a B-8 district team that finished 4-11 last season, is on a bit of winning streak after having upended Kearney Catholic and Holdrege the previous night at Memorial Stadium in Gering.

The girls’ early season losses have come against North Platte, Scottsbluff and Sterling, which leaves Gering at 3-3 going into its next matches on April 2 against Grand Island Northwest and Lexington.

Freeburg said she wants the team to “play solid defense, improve the midfield, and split the opponents defense.” Building on last season’s lessons learned, she said, “we improved our man marking off the ball through communication and watching film.”

In regard to the intricacies of the matches, Freeburg’s mind is on doing the small things well, emphasizing work on marking, the players talking to each other, getting back on defense, and ensuring strong support during attacks.

The girls team is led by eight seniors out of the 35 student-athletes vying for starting roles. “We have great senior leadership that has created a team-first attitude,” Freeburg said.

Freeburg has been coaching for Gering for seven years. She’s is aided by assistant coach Natalie Prokop.
