Courtesy of The Mitchell Index The 2016 Mitchell boys’ golf team includes, from left in the back row: Ron Sisson, Cleveland Burnett, Riley Reisig, Ethan Einfalt, Westyn Hooten and Casey Petersen. Middle row: Tyler Trimble, Bailey Branson, Mark Lamp, Seth Marcoe and Jacob Jenkins. Front row: Noah Hernandez, Marcus Carrillo, Hunter Craig and Jacob Trauernicht.
Brock Ehler, now in his sixth year of coaching the Mitchell High School boys’ golf team, returns some experienced players, but some of the newcomers are also expected to take leadership roles.

“We’re a young team but the kids are motivated,” Ehler said.
“Although a lot of them have limited experience, we’re working on improving the basics and just learning the game.”

The 14 Mitchell golfers are led by junior Seth Marcoe, who was also a strong player last year.

“Seth’s been our leader and number one golfer,”Ehler said. “We also have some other guys who can really step up. I’m expecting Tyler Trimble to be one of those who really comes alive this year.”

Ehler said his second through seventh positions are all pretty close, so he’s looking forward to how the team will sort out. “The more we play, the more competitive we get,” he said. “The guys also enjoy the camaraderie of being with each other. They have a great attitude.”

Ehler said a big part of learning the game is knowing that tournament play is far different from golfing for fun.

“Playing in tournaments adds pressure to the game,” he said. “When you’re playing for fun, there are no consequences for poor golf shots. But here, the guys are accountable to themselves and the team for every shot they make. It all goes up on the scoreboard.”

Ehler said that although the team is young, they’re enjoying the game and are working toward improvement with every game.

“It’s still early in the season, so we’ll see how it goes,” he said. “We see good competition in every tournament we play. But the real competition is between each player and himself.”
