Bobby Weigel, Morrill’s new boys’ golf coach, said his rather large team of 15 players are showing promise as they prepare for their first tournament in Bayard on April 5.

“The team is pretty balanced with about seven seniors and another six or seven freshmen,” Weigel said. “Two of the freshmen are actually on the varsity team, so they’re playing well so far.”

Weigel said the challenge for his team is to stay consistent throughout the season. Seniors expected to play leadership roles include Ryan McMackin, Ryan Aratani and Josh Harvey. All of them have played before, but none were on the team last year as they were on the track team.

“There’s good competition everywhere in the valley,” he said. “Every tournament we attend has teams like Scottsbluff and Gering, Sidney, Bridgeport and Bayard. They all bring strong teams.”

Morrill plays in both the Western Trails Conference and the Panhandle Athletic Conference.

“We’re looking for a good season this year,”Weigel said. “We had a good turnout of players this season, so we’d like to do well and send the seniors out on a good note.”
