Morrill track returns 10 letter winners

Led by two seniors and 10 letter winners, the Morrill High School track team is already turning in some strong performances.

The Morrill girls finished third at the Bayard Class C-D meet on April 2. Jessica Harvey and Leanne Sherrod placed first and second in the long jump event. They also joined teammates Shalyn Lackey and Stefanie Tarin to win the 4x100 relay event.

“Our goal is to keep working hard and improving each practice and every track meet we attend,” Coach Rick Sides said. “We have a great bunch of kids to work with, and all of them have been making improvements in both their individual events and relay teams.”

Sides said two of their seniors, Jackson Carpenter and Elvarista (Noonie) Gomez, have stepped up as team leaders and given the team more options to participate in more events.

Other team members that are performing well early on include senior Leanne Sherrod in the triple jump, long jump and 4x100 events. Jessica Harvey, a junior, also competes in a number of events, including 100 meter, high jump, 4x100 and pole vault.

In addition to the 10 returning letter winners, Morrill has another 10 athletes that are competing for the first time, including senior Noonie Gomez.

Sides said Morrill is fortunate to have a top notch track and field complex at the school. Plus, Assistant Coaches Chris Baltz, Niki Fredrickson and Ashley Gompert “bring a wealth of experience for the athletes in all the events. They do a great job working with the kids.”

Morrill competes in both the Western Trails and Panhandle Conferences.
Sides said that judging from early outings, the team will be reaching their potential by the time the district and state tournaments roll around.

“If we keep working as we have been, we have a good chance of placing very high in our district competition and taking a majority of the team to the state tournament in Omaha,” he said.
