Carpenter Center hoops courts officially open

Jerry Purvis/Gering Citizen Chamber of Commerce Ambassadors officially dedicate the Runza Sports Complex at the Carpenter Center on April 22. Center Director Bob Nemnich (left) is joined by Summer Parker, Neal Blomenkamp, Chuck Schwartz, Andy Mendoza, Austin Freeburg and Mike Moravec.
Although their basketball courts have been open for play since last June, the Carpenter Center in Terrytown officially cut the ribbon on the new complex on April 22.

“We were waiting for the arrival of the monument with all the donors’ names,” said Carpenter Center Bob Nemnich. “We have two full-sized courts available for anyone who wants to shoot some hoops. There’s also a picnic shelter there.”

The courts are named the Runza Sports Complex at the Carpenter Center to acknowledge the project’s major sponsor.

Nemnich said the project has been in the works for about three years as he arranged for donations to finance the $80,000 needed for completion.

Neal Blomenkamp, who owns Runza Restaurants in Scottsbluff and Gering, said the complex is a nice addition to the community. “We want to support all kids in all places.

The Carpenter Center is becoming more active for the whole community,” he said. “I’m a firm believer in team sports because coaches make a big difference in teaching about life and responsibility. This complex is a natural fit to my heart because it’s the kids that will continue to make the community great.”
