Hoffman earns Baum scholarship

Austin Hoffman 
Austin J. Hoffman, a Gering High School 2016 graduate, has been selected as this year’s recipient of the $500 Lemoyne D. Baum Memorial Scholarship. Austin has been accepted at Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln where he plans to further his education in pursuing a degree in physical therapy and playing basketball for the Wesleyan Prairie Wolves.

At Gering High School, Austin was a four-year honor roll student and ranks in the upper percentile of his graduating class. He was a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and served as senior class president for the G-Club.

Austin also excelled in high school sports earning four-year varsity letters in both football and basketball, and a one-year varsity letter in track. He was named to the first team All-Western Conference and received All State Honorable mention for basketball in 2014 and 2015. He was named to the basketball All-Western Conference first team and All State Second Team in 2016. Outside of high school sports, Austin also played baseball for three years with the Gering American Legion program.

He has been active in the First Christian Church in Scottsbluff serving as a deacon, worship leader, and volunteering as a Sunday school teacher.

In giving back to the community through his personal service, Austin has been a four-year volunteer at the Midwest Theater and volunteer Salvation Army bell ringer.

He has also served as a mentor in various youth basketball, football, and baseball programs as well as an umpire for the Gering Organized Baseball Program and a referee for area youth basketball tournaments. Austin is the son of Timothy and Tammy Hoffman of Gering.
