Bearcat tennis wraps up season

The Scottsbluff girls’ tennis team posted a 3-1 win over Ogallala to finish up their regular season before heading to the state tournament.

On the road for the May 12 dual match, Scottsbluff got strong performances from both its seniors in the singles division. No. 1 Maddie Holscher blanked Ogallala’s Courtney Moore, 6-0, 6-0.
Christina Villarreal at No. 2 singles took a 6-2, 6-2 win over Maddie Herman.

In doubles action, the senior team of Sarah Cloud and Stacea Pauli, at No. 1 singles, was a 6-1, 6-2 winner over Katie Bush and Haley Hansmeier. The Bearcats only loss came at No. 2 doubles as Alisha Huynh and Moriah Wyre dropped a 3-6, 3-6 match to Ogallala’s Kira Mestl and Kacey Jaeger.

“I feel like the team competed hard,” Coach Cassie Behnke said.
“They finished their regular season well and we hope to take that momentum to the state tournament.”

Nebraska high school tennis doesn’t have a playoff system in effect, so every team participates at state. This year’s tournament is May 19-20 in Lincoln.

“I just want the girls to compete at their highest level,” Behnke said. “I have four seniors and I want them to walk away, regardless of the outcome, knowing they did their best, worked their hardest and left it all on the tennis court.
