Golfers finish H.S. career at state

Jared Pilkington and Jonah Wright, seniors on the Scottsbluff boys’ golf team, finished out their high school careers at the state tournament in Lincoln on May 24-25.

Wright was in second place with a 71 after the first day. The wind came up for the second day, making the Pioneers Golf Course more challenging. Wright shot a second round of 80, finishing the tournament with 151 for fifth place overall.

Pilkington carded a first round of 76 and a second day round of 79, finishing in 12th place overall with a 155 total.

“Both the guys got off to bad starts on the second day,” Coach Mike Klein said. “Sometimes that happens in a big tournament when fighting to get through the course.”

Pilkington has signed to continue his golf career at Eastern Wyoming College. Wright is still undecided. Nebraska Lincoln, Wesleyan University, and Nebraska Omaha all watched him during the tournament. He did stay after the tournament to visit UNO.

“I think the season went well overall,” Klein said. “We had two really good seniors and the other kids are underclassmen who really improved over the season. They’ll probably play in a lot of tournaments over summer and will be better off for that next season.”
