Gering Seniors answer call, Sixth-inning run difference in 4-3 win over Alliance
     2016-06-24      By Frank Marquez    editor@geringcitizen.com
Frank Marquez/Gering Citizen Gering pitcher Austin Abbott gets the win against the Alliance Spartans Tuesday night at Oregon Trail Park. So far, Alliance and Gering have split their meetings 2-2.
The rivalry with Alliance in four games so far this season has shown some fireworks. Three games have been decided by one run. Gering suffered two losses in heartbreaking fashion with Alliance coming back from substantial deficits on June 19 and May 25. Alliance won those contests 13-12, and 14-13 after Gering held a commanding lead. These huge rallies by the Spartans have had some effect, with the Platte Valley Company seniors thinking Alliance had their number, until last night.

After four lead changes, and a 3-3 tie heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, Gering (22-7 as of June 21) pulled out a 4-3 narrow victory for some redemption on a hot blustery Tuesday night at Oregon Trail Park.

Gering’s B&C Steel juniors team (3-13-1) team dropped the early game to Alliance, 10-3.

Gering seniors’ skipper Rick Kinnaman said after the game, “I think the rivalry is based on their blue collar work ethic, and our belief that what we do will produce positive results … I told them (in a huddle before the sixth inning), if they were going to attain the goals they set for themselves, they had to dig down and be the stronger team.”

Gering’s seniors answered their coaches challenge and ended the game on a strong note. In the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring the deciding run, Quentin Timblin hit an RBI double off Alliance losing pitcher Keagan Barker, which plated Mike Gutherless, who started off the inning’s batting order with a line drive to left field.

Trace Fulk put himself in scoring position with two extra-base hits for Gering. He doubled in the first and third innings.

Austin Abbott was a workhorse on the mound, bagging the win. Abbott, 2-1 as a pitcher, allowed no earned runs, four hits and three walks while striking out four over seven innings of work. He put the Spartans away in order at the top of the seventh to end the game.

Barker took the loss for Alliance. He lasted just six innings, walked three, struck out five, and allowed four runs. Barker is now 1-1 against Gering.

Alliance jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. A single by Andrew Ochoa scored Braden Honstein. Gering’s seniors answered with two runs of their own in the first inning, with a two-run double by Fulk, whose average after this game was at .276.

Gering also had one-run rallies in the third inning and the sixth. In the third, the seniors scored on an RBI double by Fulk, plating Esai Hernandez. Alliance tied the game in the fourth inning on an RBI single by Honstien that scored Tucker Hill.

Gering American Legion Post #36 Platte Valley Companies Seniors were scheduled to play Gordon-Rushville at Gordon on June 22, Wednesday, then a double-header at Casper on June 23, Thursday.
