Race across Nebr. invites ultra-runners
     2016-07-01      By Media Report    editor@geringcitizen.com
Nebraska looks forward to rolling out the welcome mat for several highly trained athletes, who plan to run across the Sandhills giving themselves 10 days to do it. Think distance and unpredictable weather.

Starting on July 16 at the Wyoming border and finishing at South Sioux City, Iowa, a handful of elite ultra-runners will attempt the ultimate challenge of running 511 miles in The Race Across Nebraska. An event management company, the International Running Company, founded by Ogallala native son Zane Holscher will host the event.

The Race Across Nebraska is working with the Arbor Day Foundation, a charity founded in Nebraska, to offset carbon emissions by planting trees along the race route.

Ultra-runners from across the nation are expected to compete.
With no pre-defined rest breaks, each runner will balance psychological needs with the drive to finish.

Holscher said, “This is one of the longest non-stop running events in the United States.” Organizers will host a $30-plate welcome dinner on July 15, Friday, at the Gering Civic Center with keynote speaker Greg Ellis, a member of the 1990 Georgia Tech National Championship football team. Ellis will speak on overcoming addiction, and his outlet running ultra-marathons. Ellis ran a 100-mile run after hip replacement surgery. In this race, he’s raising money for the Carter Hope Center, a non-profit substance abuse center that saved his life.
