Eddie’s Huskers win third straight Cougar Golf Classic

The Western Nebraska Community College Cougar Golf Classic was held on Saturday and Eddie’s Huskers won their third straight title in a close battle this year at Monument Shadows Golf Course.

Eddie’s Huskers shot a handicapped 49 score to finish on top of Runza (51.00) and Platte Valley Companies (51.60). Eddie’s Huskers and Runza both shot a gross score of 57, but Eddie’s Huskers handicap was the difference in the win.

Eddie’s Huskers included Mike McKee, Rick Gable, Ed Ratliff, and Matt Hessler. The Runza team included Jon Roberts, John Schlothauer, Chris Samuelson, and Brook Blomenkamp, while the Platte Valley Companies team members were Jeff Maser, Mark Payne, Amy Hauser, and Tammy Hoffman.

The third best gross score came from the Bluffs Broadcasting team of Doug Scholtz, Kim Moore, Rick Rein, and Steve Hall, who shot a gross 59, two strokes behind Eddie’s Huskers and Runza.

Eighteen teams were part of the 13th Cougar Golf Classic. It is only the second time that a team has won three-straight. Roy’s Plumbing and Heating won three straight in the first years of the golf classic (2004-2006).

The all-women’s team winner was the 4 Ladies comprised of Stacy Mitchell, Maria Winn-Ratliff, Wendy Goos, and Stacy Celli. They had a net score of 54.30.

On top of the best score first-place winners, three other teams also won prize money by draw. First place draw winner was the Zone (Spencer Blomenkamp, Shane Wilson, Josh Wilson, and Seth Covalt), second place draw winner was All Business (Trae Blanco, Tom Robinson, Michael Broderick, and Scott Winters), and third place draw winner was Safetyline (Armand Castaneda, Bob Hessler, Greg Sell, and Ryan Burgner).

The golf classic included hole prizes. The winners were Stacy Mitchell (longest putt for women on hole 2 as well as the longest drive for women on hole 10), John Gillen (longest drive for men on hole 4), Jon Roberts (closest to the pin in 2 on hole 5), Jason Parks (shortest drive for men on hole 8), Guy Robarge (closest to the water on hole 9), Rick Rein (closest to the sand on hole 12), Molly Bonuchi (shortest drive for women on hole 15), and Rick Gable (longest putt for men on hole 18).

The winners of the best dressed golf team included the 4 Ladies team and the Perkins team. Perkins team members included Jason McNabb, Kyle McNabb, Monty McNabb, and Shane Brumbaugh.

Proceeds from the golf classic will go to the WNCC athletic scholarship fund.
