First-year Western Nebraska Community College men’s basketball coach Cory Fehringer inked his first player for next season.

Vinnie Shahid, a 5-foot-11 guard from Hopkins High in Minnetonka, Minnesota, signed on to play for the Cougars. Shahid is excited to begin the new chapter.

“I chose WNCC because I felt it was the best fit for me and my goals that want to achieve academically and athletically,” he said. “I’m very excited to start my new chapter playing basketball as a Cougar ready to make a new run with a new group of guys.”

Shahid had several Division I schools looking at him, including Niagara, Tennessee Tech, and Nicholls State, as well as some other junior colleges.

Fehringer said Shahid comes from a winning program that went 31-1 last season and won a state title. His high school coach Ken Novak, Jr., is one of the most successful coaches in Minnesota history, accumulating over 700 wins.

“Vinnie is a tremendous assist for any program because of his leadership on and off the floor,” Fehringer said. “He is a commodity as a student athlete and a proven winner as they have won a state championship at Hopkins High School, the highest classification in Minnesota.”

At Hopkins, Shahid averaged 15 points and three assists, while shooting 51 percent from the 3-point arc and 80 percent from the free three line. Fehringer said Shahid has all the tools to be a top-notch point guard.

“Basketball-wise, Vinnie is a knock down shooter from the arc. He is a point guard that knows how to get the players the ball,” he said. “He understands execution on both ends of the floor.
Defensively he has a great nose for the basketball and a mind of how to make plays, whether it is rotation or taking charges.
Offensively, he is a polished point guard with a high IQ.”

Shahid brings plenty of basketball savvy to Scottsbluff. Shahid comes from a high school in Minnesota that is known for basketball talent. The program is ranked 14th in the nation.
Shahid was 4A all-state last season.

“My high school team was a winning-type of team,” Shahid said. “We have one of the best high school coaches in the nation. I grew up and played all my life as well as high school with ESPN top 100 Amir Coffey. All the guys I played with this year so we had very good chemistry.”

Coffey will be playing at the University of Minnesota next year. Other NBA players that played at Hopkins included Royce White and Kris Humphries.

What Shahid wants to accomplish at WNCC is to become a better basketball player and move onto a higher Division I school.

“My goals at WNCC are to academically be successful and to help my teammates stay on the right path as a leader,” he said. “I also would like to achieve not only making the national tournament but pushing to win it. I think if I do that all of my personal goals such as receiving higher Division 1 attention will fall into play.”

Fehringer thinks the fans of Western Nebraska will like what Shahid will bring to the table.

“I am very excited for Vinnie to come to Western Nebraska,” he said. “I think the community of western Nebraska should be excited to have a student like Vinnie. He will take care of his academics at a high level the same way he will compete for the Cougars on a nightly basis.”
