Gering claims B-7 title

Gering Legion Post #36 Platte Valley Companies Seniors rolled into Chadron Tuesday night prepared for battle, knowing this was going to be tough game. It was. In a back and forth affair over seven innings, Gering ended up on top, 4-3, to clinch the class B-7 District Championship.

Gering, now with a record of 34-19, entered the tournament with positive energy and even though they trailed in every game, they managed the type of rallies that resulted in wins. Friday night’s game against Ogallala was cancelled due to rain, and was moved to Saturday afternoon. The 36ers claimed the victory, 9-7. Earning the win on the mound for Gering, Austin Reynolds struck out six, walked one and gave up nine hits. Dalton Scott led the team at the plate. Scott had two RBI’s on two hits He also singled, and had a double in the fifth inning. Quentin Timblin, Chris Palomo, and Esai Hernandez also had RBI’s.

On Sunday against Alliance, the score was a back-and-forth tug of war. Gering seniors again won 8-7. Chris Palomo had an amazing day at the plate with four RBI’s, launching one over the fence in the third inning. Pitcher Brent Barge earned the win, allowing seven runs in seven innings. He stuck out two, walked two and gave up nine hits. Austin Abbott, Trace Fulk, and Mike Gutherless also had RBI’s.

In Tuesday night’s championship game against Chadron, Fulk recorded the win on the mound. Fulk went seven innings and only allowed one earned run, four hits, no walks, and one strike out. Abbott led the charge with the bat. Abbott hit a two run single in the fifth inning to score Palomo and Barge to give Gering the lead. Scott also had an RBI single. Timblin had a strong finish with two hits. Assistant Coach Danny O’Boyle said they chose to pitch Fulk in the championship game because he throws strikes, and doesn’t get down.

Fulk said he was nervous going in the game. “Yeah I was, it’s a big game with a lot riding on it. Once I started pitching and the ball was put in play my guys behind me stepped in and knocked it down,” he said, of players who have gratefully accepted the only out-of-towner on the team. Fulk is from Mitchell. “The guys in the field were on top of the ball and if they slipped up it didn’t stop them.”

Timblin had a big day in the outfield. He seemed to be everywhere, seamlessly slipping into gaps, and characterizing one of Gering’s trademarks, an airtight defense. Gering’s coaches and players never gave up and stayed pumped up on the field and dugout.

Fulk said, “I have been playing baseball since I was four years old and I have been waiting for this day my whole life. I love every guy on this team, they are my brothers. I know we are going to state with a team that can win. We aren’t done yet.”

Gering heads for Plattsmouth, Nebraska, for a run at the state title. The next-level tourney runs from July 30 to August 4.
