Forty-three runners lined up for the start of the 2016 Morrill Horse Creek Rendezvous 5K Race on July 9, though the route was “a bit shy of 5K.” Organizer Josh Guerue, Morrill High School’s newly minted Activities Director, was pleased with the turn out. “It’s a beautiful day for it,” he said. “We want to grow this race, and spread the word to get more participants next year,” he said.

A one-mile fun run for kids was also part of the event, with 9 children participating. Six-year-old J.D. Schmidt was the youngest runner, under 6.

First across the finish line in the adult race was Shane Burkey, of Scottsbluff, with a 15:28 time. Burkey, a former standout at Scottsbluff, now competes at the University of Nebraska at Kearney. In second and third, respectively, were brothers Joshua Hergenreder, in at 15:29, and Noah Hergenreder, at 16:00. Both are Scottsbluff seniors this year, training to compete in cross country and track. The first female runner to finish was Aubree Worden, with a 16:47:00 time. Worden finished her senior year at Scottsbluff in 2011 with double Class B, All-Class state titles, having won both the 1,600 and 3,200 meter runs at Omaha Burke Stadium to capture the Class B races and the All-Class State Medals in those events for the third straight year. She is now in her sixth year of collegiate track, and competed in as many local summer races as possible as part of her training. She is currently at the University of Arkansas, working for a master’s degree in Food Science.
