Scottsbluff tennis stacked with experience

Coming off a second place finish in the Greater Nebraska Athletic Conference tournament last fall, the Scottsbluff boys’ tennis team brings a lot of experience into the 2016 season.

“We lost a couple of players to graduation last year, but everyone else is back,” said Coach Maddie Johnson, now in her third year of coaching the boys’ team. “The team is all juniors and seniors, so we have some experience going in. All of them have been playing since they were freshmen and sophomores.”

Standouts Owen Parra and Patrick Madden were lost to graduation and Johnson said it will be big shoes to fill. However, the returning nine team members are up to the challenge.

Starting out with challenge matches, team positions should be set by the time of their first invitational on Aug. 27 in McCook. Johnson said there will be no huge changes from last year’s squad, other than filling the two lost positions.

“We always look forward to the GNAC tournament because it gets us ready for state,” Johnson said. “We also have five invitational tournaments this season, which give us a look at how others in the conference are playing.”

She said the Hastings Invite, added to the schedule last year, is a good one for Scottsbluff. It gives the team an opportunity go up against players from eastern Nebraska, which they usually don’t see during the regular season.

“We don’t have a lot of duals this season, other than Gering and Alliance,” Johnson said. “It’s the invites that really get us prepared for state.
