The Scottsbluff Bearcats play in the B8 District. Last year they finished the season with at 6-4, winning district and getting a playoff berth. The Cats lost in the first round to Gretna. “We are excited and look forward to being competitive,” said Joe Benson, who is in his 10th year as Head Coach of the Bearcats, and has an overall win-loss record of 56-34.

“Our goal is to play our best football at the end of the season. (Last season) we ran the ball well and played good defense. This season, we plan to blitz more on defense and play fundamental football.” Benson won’t have to be too concerned about depth with his almost 100-man roster, 95 to be exact.

Benson will rely on assistants Mike Fisher, Derek Deaver, Todd Menghini, Mark Moran, Ben Treffer, Jud Hall and Jake McClain. He also has five starters returning on offense, and an equal number on defense. Those starters include seniors Braden Lofink at defensive back; Max Mason at running back, who averaged 200 yards a game last season; Kobe Paez at tight end and linebacker; Josh Moore at defensive back; Kris Kizzire at defensive tackle, Isaac DeLos Santos at linebacker, who led team in tackles last season; Landon Walker at tight end; Genaro Gurrola and Isaiah Blanco, both at outside linebacker; and Robbie Price at defensive back.

Returning letter winners include Noah Bruner at quarterback; Salem Harsh at end; Hever Morales and Kishan Contreras at defensive back; and Austin Gonzales at defensive end. Linemen Luke Ferguson, Elijah Salinas, Joe Collett, Dalen Stolen, and Adam Von Lintel represent the linemen. Lastly, Eli De Los Santos returns as kicker.

Newcomers to watch include Garrett Nelson, Keegan Reifschneider, Graham Robbins, Jordan Hort, Chris Busby, Jasiya DeOllos, and Perris Magdaleno.

Benson said about his overflowing roster, “We will have good team speed and depth on the lines with the running back, tight end, and inside linebacker positions as our strengths.”
