Mitchell is keeping team-first mindset

Head Coach Jimmie Rhodes talks with players during last week's scrimmage.
Mitchell returns a group of leaders that are thirsty to continue what they started in 2015. The Tigers experience and team speed is what they plan to build on during the course of the season, according to second-year Head Coach and Athletic Director Jimmie Rhodes. “The attitude of putting the team first will make this very competitive and dangerous,” he said.

The Tigers compete in the C-8 District in which they finished with a 5-3 overall record last season. Rhodes’ overall record of 17-25 speaks to the few down years he experienced a Gering High School, before resigning as the football head coach there and finding the right fit with Mitchell.

Rhodes coaching staff remains largely unchanged and includes Dillon Broussard, Joe Yawney, Anthony Chancellor, Todd Westover, Walker Britsch, and Kyle King.

The Tigers run a spread offense and a base defense with three down linemen, and five versatile backs to help out in the secondary. The roster includes returning starters and a senior backfield of Chris Perez, Abe Hernandez, and Trent Strawder. Senior linemen and utility players include Seth Marcoe, Darryn Walters, Noah Hernandez, Ethan Eilfalt, Bailey Branson, and Cleveland Burnett.

Topping the list of juniors, Drake Gilliland had racked up 719 yards on 126 carries last year. Other notable underclassmen include Casey Peterson, Riley Reisig, Justin Spencer, Dylan Lower, Hunter Lemley, Ian Carrier, Blake Thyne and Kaden Bradley.

With a wealth of veteran experience, Mitchell may have the advantage in separating itself from the pack of district foes that includes Chadron, Chase County, Gordon-Rushville, and Ogallala.
