WNCC release

The top-ranked Western Nebraska Community College volleyball team captured their 10th straight victory in winning two more matches at the Wyo-Braska Classic on Saturday.

The Cougars opened up Saturday’s play by sweeping Garden City Community College 25-19, 25-13, 25-16 before taking out Northwest College in four games 25-22, 26-24, 26-19, 25-15.

Northwest was the last team to defeat the Cougars two weekends ago.

With Saturday’s wins, WNCC is now 18-2 on the season with two road matches next week when they travel to Casper College on September 22, and then Eastern Wyoming College on September 23.

Lara Picht, who had nine kills against Garden City and a team-leading 16 kills against Northwest, said they started a little slow this morning but ended up playing pretty good for the day.

“In the morning we were stating without a lot of energy because it was early and we were tired, but we got it done,” Picht said. “The second match was a lot of fun to play in the three sets that we won. I think we did pretty good.”

A big key to the Cougars 4-0 mark in the Wyo-Braska Classic was staying tough. And, for the most part, the Cougars kept that energy up to get two more wins.

Against Garden City, nine different players recorded a kill, while 10 different players had a dig. Picht and Brooke Kaawa each had nine kills. Barbara Briceno had eight, Alweise Villa had five kills, Joise Maldonado had four, Kaylee Spreier had two, and one each for Bia Berti, Danika Daum, and Kadara Marshall.

Genesis Benitez-Fontanez led the way with 11 digs followed by Kirstee Trees with six, Lauren Shaul with five, and four each from Picht, Berti, and Spreier.

Berti added 29 set assists with three points and ace, while Daum ahd two set assists. Spreier finished with 10 points and three aces, while Trees also had 10 points and three aces.

In the Northwest match, Briceno finished with a triple double of 15 kills, 10 points and 10 digs. Berti also had a double-double of 34 set assists and 11 digs.

Also for the Cougars, Picht had 16 kills and seven digs; Spreier had two kills, eight digs, 16 points and two aces; Kaawa had seven kills and 13 digs; Maldonado had seven kills and two digs; Benitez-Fontanz had seven digs; Trees had five digs and nine points; and Shaul had two digs and two points.
